چکیده

Adequate oral or intravenous doses of a betaadrenergic receptor-blocking drug, nethalide,' produce no significant changes in the resting oxygen consumption, heart rate, cardiac output, and systemic mean arterial or mean right atrial pressures of patients with spontaneous hyperthyroidism (1). These findings do not support the concept that the hemodynamic changes in hyperthyroidism are mediated through adrenergic stimulation of betaadrenergic receptors. The work of Brewster, Isaacs, Osgood, and King, however, supported the hypothesis that the sympathetic nervous system may be responsible for the metabolic and hemodynamic changes associated with the hypermetabolic state, since the alterations induced by thyroid feeding to dogs could be abolished by epidural blockade (2). The possibility exists that spontaneous hyperthyroidism and drug-induced hypermetabolism may have similar hemodynamic findings but different mechanisms. This study was designed to test the effects of beta-adrenergic blockade in normal subjects before, during, and after the induction of hypermetabolism with triio-

The glucose receptor. A defective mechanism in diabetes mellitus distinct from the beta adrenergic receptor.

Acute serum insulin responses in 10 normal subjects after rapid intravenous injection of glucose (5 g) or isoproterenol (2 mug) were of similar magnitude and timing (glucose: 431+/-349%; mean Delta3-5' insulin (IRI)+/-SD, per cent basal and isoproterenol: 359+/-216%; mean Delta2-4' IRI+/-SD, per cent basal). To elucidate the relationship of glucose-induced insulin secretion to pancreatic beta a...

Rate corrected systolic time intervals and Valsalva manoeuvre.

Measurements of left ventricular systolic time intervals during the Valsalva manoeuvre have been made in IO normal subjects, 5 patients with ischaemic heart disease before and after treatment with a beta adrenergic blocking drug, and 5 patients with cardiomyopathy. The individual relation between the heart rate and the left ventricular ejection time was established in the normal subjects during...

Cardiovascular counterregulation during sympathetic inhibition in normal subjects and patients with mild hypertension.

The influence of agents that inhibit sympathetic nerve activity on cardiovascular responsiveness as related to major pressor factors has been unclear. Therefore, these components were evaluated in 11 normal subjects and 13 patients with mild essential hypertension before and after 4 weeks of sympathetic neuron blockade with the agent debrisoquine. In these normal and mildly hypertensive subject...

Effects of alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptor stimulation and oxytocin receptor blockade on milking characteristics in dairy cows before and after removal of the teat sphincter.

Alpha (alpha)- and beta (beta)-adrenergic receptors in the bovine mammary gland are mainly present in the teat muscles and in the region where large milk ducts reach the cisternal cavities. The aim of the study was to test the hypothesis that the region of the large mammary ducts is the most important location of alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptor stimulation affecting milk ejection and milk r...
